The Importance of God’s Word

Numbers 23:19:

God is not a man, that he should lie.

This is a remarkable verse. We have learned through experience that many people do not tell the truth; they do not do what they say they will do. It is important to remember that God is not like people; He does not lie and what He says is true and will work. God gave us His Word so that we would know Him and have confidence in what He said. Let’s look at what the Bible says about God’s Word.

Genesis 1:3:

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Wow! When God spoke, it came to pass. God keeps His Word and does not lie. God gave His Word and look at the result to those who believed. His Word is powerful!

Psalms 107:20:

He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.

Have you ever walked into a room when it was dark and the lights were not turned on? If so, perhaps you stubbed your toe or bumped into a piece of furniture. It is much easier to move when it is dark if there is light somewhere. The same is true for us when we walk with the light of God’s Word.

Psalms 119:105:

They word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

In the times of the Bible people would get up very early to go out to the fields to work. There were no street lamps or flashlights back then, but they needed light so they could see where they were going. Traditionally, they would take a piece of rope and light the end of it in a fire so that there would be embers on the rope. (see Isaiah 50:11, 12) They would then swing the rope in front of them as they walked so that their path would be lit. God’s Word lights our path so that we do not have to stumble or fall.

Psalm 19:8:

The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
