Goodness of God

Have you ever been blamed for something bad that happened that was not your fault? Perhaps something got broken and someone accused you of doing it even though you were not around at the time it was broken. Sometimes someone else does something wrong and you get punished for it. These situations do not seem fair, do they?

Many times God gets the blame when bad things happen. People will say that a catastrophic storm or accident was “God’s fault”. Or when someone dies they might say that God “wanted them in heaven.” These are lies because God does not do evil or bad things to people. God loves us and wants us to trust Him and love Him.

To begin to see this from God’s Word let’s look at the book of Psalms.

Psalms 34:8-10:
O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

O fear the Lord, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.

The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.

A person who trusts in God is blessed and will not lack any good thing that they need in life. Now that is goodness!

There is another great verse in Psalms 84 that we should look at.

Psalms 84:11:
For the Lord God is sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

You see God loves us and wants to bless us and take care of us in all that we do. When we “seek the Lord” He promises that we “shall not want any good thing.” Our job is to seek out God’s Word and do the things that God wants us to do. When we study and believe and walk on God’s Word we are walking “uprightly” and He will withhold “no good thing” in our lives.

A long time ago there was a group of people whom God took care of and tried to help whenever they would let Him. These were the children of Israel. Sometimes, though, they disobeyed God and found themselves in trouble. They had become slaves in the land because of turning away from God and His commandments. However, after a period of time the children of Israel wanted to return to God. This allowed God to help them out of their negative situation and into what He had originally promised them.

Joshua 21:43-45:
And the Lord gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein.
And the Lord gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hand.
There failed not ought of any good thing which the Lord had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass.

When they believed God’s Word He was able to take care of them. All of the “good thing” which God had promised came to pass.

Psalm 25:8:
Good and upright is the Lord.
